About Mobile TV

DStv Mobile aggregates and produces mobile TV content and services for a number of mobile platforms and technologies.

Enjoy action-packed sports coverage from around the globe with SuperSport, or tune into Channel O for the freshest pan African music programmes.   Kids can enjoy the home of top toon stars Cartoon Network with the latest and greatest cartoon heroes, plus so much more.

Currently DStv Mobile is accessible in South Africa via 3G streaming (3G) and through a DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast Handheld Technology) trial.

DVB-H is a type of broadcast technology that utilises its own network of transmitters. In other words it does not use the same network as that used by cellphones nor the satellite DStv service that beams programming to household televisions.   3G Streaming utilises the same infrastructure as that used by cellphones, thus it is dependent on the Mobile Network Operators’ networks.

3G  is a one-to-one transmission, and as a result is subject to the same bandwidth limitations as voice and data services. These networks are two-way or “bi-directional” and allow a user to request content on demand, and download it for immediate or later use.

DVB-H, by contrast, is one-to-many transmission that is broadcast to cellphones.  Like ordinary TV, it is a one-way or "uni-directional" broadcast.

In 2008, DStv Mobile launched its DVB-H services commercially in Namibia, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria.

In South Africa, the DStv Mobile DVB-H service is under a trial licence and the service is only available to a closed group of users.
